The Benefits of Running

You've heard it all before – you think these people are mad. Why would you pound the pavement and wreck your knees to go running when you don’t even enjoy it?

I use to be like you. The idea of running scared me, actually scared me. But I thought that it was something that I should try. I liked exercise, I liked achieving things and I hated the fact that something created such a negative emotion in me when millions of people all over the world pick it as their number one way to keep fit and healthy.

I have 4 reasons of why running can be beneficial to you. And some of them can be looked at as just the benefits of exercise but I think that running brings a certain amount of achievement, a feeling of everything else fading in to the background that you can’t get with other types of exercise. It is just you and your running gear – going the distance and taking in the scenery, getting lost in your own thoughts, not having to think too much about anything else. For every kilometer that you run – it’s a little more satisfaction.

So here are my 4 reasons:

v  Keeps bones strong – running increases bone mass and keeps them strong along with joints, so that you do not become more susceptible to breaking bones

v  Relieves stress and anxiety – leave all your troubles inside and take in your surroundings outside, raise your heart rate and get a really good sweat on.  Producing happy serotonin in the body which boosts your mood and allows you to think more clearly and positively

v  Keep you trim – you burn a lot of calories running. The second most effective way to burn as many calories as possible in an hour. Along with a balance diet – running is a great way to manage your weight. Running first thing in the morning also boosts your metabolism which also helps you to burn more calories throughout the day. And for me, a morning run sets me up perfectly for the day, it puts me in a great mood and makes me more focused

v  Improves self-confidence – once you get your route and you can keep improving your distance, there is nothing that you cannot do! Running gives you’re a sense of achievement. You and only you got you through that 5k run. You did all the hard work and it makes you feel good and you can progress

So why not give running a go? Yes, it isn’t for everyone but it is for a lot of people. Don’t disregard it before you have even tried it. You don’t have to start out straight away running a marathon or even 5K. Go out and see you what you can do, see how far you get. And then the next time you go out – run that little bit further. You may get the running bug you may not – but at least you would have tried. And if you like it – it’s a way of keeping fit and healthy without a cost. You can challenge yourself and achieve something every time you run. Running keeps me sharp and focused, I like an early morning run to grab the day with both hands. See what you think…

It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle — when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
